June 19–To near Thornbury, Ontario

After our waterfall quest last week, the next day was kind of a bust weather wise so we took a day off and then we returned home.

This weekend we had a get together with some work friends from the company where Jennie and I met about 37 years ago. We have a core group of about 10 of us that have gotten together around every 3 or 4 months ever since. We have a pot luck on a rotating basis at each of our houses. It is always a great time.

Today we moved farther north to explore another section of the Niagara Escarpment. The astronomy club I belong to has a house and observatory on the top of the escarpment overlooking the town of Thornbury, very near the Blue Mountain and The Peaks ski resorts.

Many years ago one of the members of the club donated the house and land. For a small daily fee or a yearly pass, members can come up and do their observing in the darks skies and then stay in the house once they are done.

There is a full kitchen and living room with 3 bedrooms upstairs and then a dorm style area downstairs.

We have a nice view from the balcony down to Georgian Bay.

The building in the back is the club’s observatory, with a large telescope on a very good mount. The roof slides off on the rails to the right giving a full sky view.

We found a parking spot next some other people’s trailers that are left here.

Farther back are a line of domes housing individual member’s telescopes.

Along the driveway they have set up posts for each planet showing the relative distance between them.

Poor Pluto has been demoted.

In truth, the pole used to be so far away down the back of the property that almost no one went there.

We are going to be here for a week, exploring the area. The club is also having an open house and picnic next weekend so it will get a lot more busy.
